How To Make DIY Garage Cabinets – Step By Step Guidelines

Step 1: Empty out the garage

It’s always best to start your work with a clean canvas; clean out your garage, especially where you will use it to build the cabinets.

Step 2: Design Planning

Create a design plan that’s going to work best for you. You can make them as tall and wide as you like.

An L-shaped cabinet is a great idea as it doesn’t take up too much space and comes quite in handy to store a large number of items and on top of that, gives your garage an elegant look.

Step 3: Take Proper Measurements

Take measurements and markdown on the wood wherever you want to cut, so you don’t get confused later. Note down all of your measurements and make sure it fits perfectly and there is no gap in the design.

It is also a good idea to cut and organize all the wood based on the measurements you have made before you start the work. So when you begin, all you have to do is just pick whichever piece of wood you need. Read on to find out how you can cut up the sheets.

Step 4: Pre-painting wood

You’ll see that painting all the wood you require beforehand will cut down the time it takes to build the cabinets by half. So after you’re done with all your measurements and cutting and dividing the wood, start your paintwork.

Use any high-quality paint of any color; there are tons of glossy paints available in stores, which will give your cabinet a premium look. Leave the paint to dry for a day to avoid scars on your cabinet the next time you start your work.

Step 5: Installing plywood on the wall

Attach sheets of plywood to the wall. You may have drywall or a stud wall, and depending on that, you have to adjust how to attach the plywood to your wall.

The height of the plywood will be the height of your cabinet. Here, use thinner plywood sheets as this is just the back of your cabinet, and doing so will keep your costs down.

Step 6: Build a frame

You have to build a frame for the cabinets according to your design. You can use plywood to do so; however, check if your garage floor slopes at an angle because you would have to adjust your frame according to that angle.

For an L-shaped cabinet, you would have to build L-shaped frames. Cut the plywood according to your design using a table saw. Make sure to mark down measurements wherever needed.

2×4 feet plywood sheet is a good choice for making the frames. Cut the sheet into equal lengths using the table saw and join them together with the help of your drill and wood screws.

Make two identical frames, one for the base and one for the top of your cabinets. You may cover the frame with plywood if you wish to do so.

The frames you build can be of any shape or design; here we just gave you an example of an L-shaped one.

Step 7: Build an outline

Next, if you are building a low cabinet with a countertop, it’s best to place vertical 2 x 4 plywood pieces on top of the bottom frame to attach the top frame to the bottom one. After you’re done with this step, you’ll have a fully ready outline for your cabinet.

On the other hand, if you want a tall shelf-like cabinet, instead of vertical sheets, attach plywood sheets of any length you desire on the sides of the bottom frame and then add shelves in between.

Step 8: Top and ends of the cabinet

Again, if you want to have a countertop, you can use the method below but use a slightly thicker plywood material to give a nice finished look.

Just cut the plywood sheets according to the outline and attach them to the top of the cabinet. If you’re making an L-shaped cabinet, your top must be in two pieces. For the sides, attach plywood sheets of the same height and length as the frame,

However, if you’re going to make more layers of the same type of cabinet, Repeat the same method you followed to make the first cabinet and build it on top of the first frame.

Step 9: Build doors

Now, build doors for the cabinets. You can use the same thickness of plywood you used for the back (the one you attached to the wall) or any other thickness you desire. However, keep in mind that these are doors, so it’s best to keep them light. Next, attach the hinges and door handles using the tools mentioned.

Step 10: Final touches

If you wish, you can make magnetic doors. You can add extra strips of wood and build a picture-frame sort of design; it’s up to you how you want to decorate it because now you have built yourself a cabinet completely on your own!
